All three of these programs have income guidelines, a modest fee and require homeowner participation.

Habitat builds and renovates houses in partnership with qualifying families, using as much donated material and labor as possible. Homes are sold at fair market value and financed with no-interest loans, making the monthly payments affordable.
Like every Habitat for Humanity affiliate, Northern Fox Valley selects its homeowners based on three criteria:
- The applicant’s level of housing need
- Their willingness to become partners in the program
- Their ability to repay the no-profit, no-interest loan
Employment history, credit history, and ability to make the monthly mortgage payments are also considered. Neither race nor religion is a factor in selecting families.
Our affiliate builds homes in portions of Cook, Kane, and McHenry Counties.

A Brush with Kindness
A Brush With Kindness (ABWK) Program offers exterior home maintenance assistance for low-income families, elderly, and individuals with disabilities who are struggling to do the maintenance themselves. The scope of projects through this program is limited to exterior painting, light landscaping, and yard cleanup. We identify ABWK candidates through our application process, affiliation referrals and code violations.
Once an application is approved, we assemble and coordinate a team of 5-10 volunteers depending on the size of the project. This program not only helps homeowners, but neighborhoods become revitalized and energized.

The Critical Home Repair (CHR) program offers home repairs and improvements necessary for restoring and maintaining safe living conditions. This program is applicable for seniors, those with a disability, or family circumstances who struggle to maintain the integrity of their homes. Projects include interior or exterior work performed to alleviate critical health, life and safety issues or code violations. Volunteer teams, along with subcontractors, work under the direction of Habitat staff to complete the repairs.

Aging In Place
The Aging In Place (AIP) program makes safety and functional home modifications and renovations to meet the needs of low-income elderly homeowners. Repairs and renovations include the installation of accessibility ramps, walk-in bathtubs, handrails as well as upgraded lighting, levered door handles, wider door openings and the elimination of trip hazards. These modifications allow seniors to enter, exit and live in their homes more safely and independently.
