Build Day Information
Typical Work Days
We build every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, from 8:30am to 4:00pm. Volunteers are asked to arrive on time and stay for the entire day to work on various stages of contruction. No experience is necessary; just a willing heart. Staffed Project Directors and volunteer Crew Leaders are available team teach you every step of the way.
Work Day Schedule
8:30 am— Volunteer Safety and Orientation
9:00 am— Begin Working
12:00 pm—Lunch Break
1:00 pm— Resume Working
3:30 pm— Clean-Up
4:00pm— End of Day
What to Bring
Volunteers should bring their own water bottle and sack lunch, unless other arrangements are made with your team. We do not provide bottled water on our job sites. Water coolers replenished daily will be available to refill your own water bottles. Habitat for Humanity will provide tools on-site, but feel free to bring your own work gloves or favorite hammer, utility knife, or other handy tool. If you do bring your own tools, please make sure to label them with your name.
Dress weather appropriate, as you may be working on both interior and exterior projects. Please wear closed-toe shoes; this is required to be on the work site. We recommend cargo pants/shorts, jeans, and gym shoes or work boots with short-sleeved shirts in the summer and lots of layers during the winter months. Check VolunteerUP to see whether or not the house you will be working on is heated if you are working in the winter months. No yoga pants or camisole tank tops are allowed on site, as they do not offer the proper amount of skin protection.
Cancellations and Updates
In the unlikely event that a build day needs to be cancelled due to weather, or any other unforeseen event, you may be notified in two ways. First, cancellation information will be posted on the Broadcast Message page when you first login to VolunteerUP. Volunteers can only see this message by logging on to the site. Second, volunteers will receive an email from one of the Habitat staff. Emergency build day cancellations will be posted by 7:30am the morning of your build day unless otherwise requested.
Work to be Completed
All jobs are subject to change based on productivity of teams before you, number of volunteers per work day, and weather. Tasks are updated on VolunteerUP as an announcement at the top of the sign-up page two weeks prior to each build day, so if you do not see any potential projects listed when you register, please check back closer to your build day. These are NOT guaranteed tasks; they are simply to give you an idea of the current stage of construction.
Release and Waiver of Liability
Each volunteer must sign a Release and Waiver of Liability agreeing to take personal responsibility for any accident or injury that may occur on the work site. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to be on a Habitat for Humanity job site. Minor volunteers aged 16 and 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with a signed double-sided Minor Release and Waiver of Liability. One Release and Waiver of Liability per calendar year is required for each volunteer.
Worksite Safety Guidelines
We request all volunteers watch our Habitat for Humanity 8-minute Safety Video prior to working on a job site. Safety is our number one concern, so please take the time to familiarize yourself with standard safety precautions for construction sites. Each volunteer must also read our safety guidelines prior to going to working on a construction project.
