How to Apply for a Habitat for Humanity Home
The process can take anywhere from 1 to 2 years to move into a home after the application has been reviewed and the partner family approved.
Step 1: Applicant(s) must complete a Self Assessment Questionnaire and register to attend a Homeowner Orientation. You must submit a completed Self Assessment Questionnaire in order to register for an orientation.
Homeowner Orientations in 2015 will be held on the 4th Tuesday of each month, starting in Feburary, at 6:30pm at our affiliate office located at 56 South Grove Avenue in Elgin. Parking is in lots both north and south of the building. Information on registration is found on the Upcoming Orientations page of this site. The upcoming dates are Feburary 24, March 24, April 28, and May 26.
Step 3: A file is setup for the applicant(s), and the application for completeness.
Step 4: Applicant(s) is notified of incomplete application or ineligibility. Applicant(s) must send in the information that made the application incomplete within requested time limit, or applications that are complete and appear to meet basic requirements are forwarded to Family Selection Committee.
Step 5: A credit check on the applicant(s) is conducted and reviewed by the Family Selection Committee. Applicant(s) is notified of eligibility or sent letter of rejection.
Step 6: Applicant completes 10 hours of “sweat equity,” and Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley receives all references in good standing within 30 days of request.
Step 7: The Family Selection Committee conducts a home visit.
Step 8: A second credit check on the applicant(s) may be conducted.
Step 9: Family Selection Committee makes a recommendation to the Board of Directors.
Step 10: The Board of Directors makes a decision to approve or disapprove the applicant(s).
Step 11: The applicant(s) is notified of Board’s decision, and (if approved) a Family Liaison is assigned.
Step 12: Applicant(s) begins the 250/500 “sweat equity” hours and attends the scheduled budget counseling course (if requested).
